Types of Irrigation Systems

What Is Irrigation?

Irrigation is simply a way to get water to plants in a different way than rain. You can use it to replace rain water in enclosed areas or to simply provide additional water in areas with little rainfall. A properly designed irrigation system can be water efficient and a huge time saver. While we get a lot of rain in Louisiana, an irrigation system can help you through the drought periods as well.

Types of Irrigation Sytems

Sprinkler System
Also known as Spray Head Irrigation, this usually involved a stationary irrigation head that either pops up out of the ground or is static. The tips spray a fine mist in a radial spray reaching up to fifteen feet away from the head. These are commonly seen in residential and commercial irrigation systems for landscape beds.

Picture
Drip Irrigation
This is the most water efficient method of irrigation. It drips water directly to the plant root zone. This method is effective in watering hedge rows or evenly spaced flowers or plants in a garden.

Picture
Rotary Irrigation
Also called gear driven irrigation, this systems can water over sixty feet away. These are great for watering grass and low lying plants. These are used on golf courses, sports fields, and on home lawns.

Micro-Irrigation
Micro-Irrigation works in the same way as a spray head irrigation system, but it requires far less water. These are often tied into an exterior water faucet on a home and water a small landscape bed area.

Ditch Irrigation
The oldest method of irrigation. Ditches are dug to drain in fresh water and fed into a series of canals that run between rows of raised soil where crops have been planted.
Picture
Terraced Irrigation
Useful if growing plants on elevated land that is very steep. With a lot of labor, time and material, steps are cut into the land of the hill. Much like a slinky, the water goes down each step towards the bottom. Each step will be watered and crops can be grown on the hill side.

Picture
Center Pivot Irrigation
Center pivot irrigation is another irrigation system used to water crops. A steel or aluminum skeleton of pipes is attached to wheels at the bottom and a spinning metal arm on top. The metal arm has sprinklers along the length of it that sprays as it turns. The system can be moved around a large field so multiple areas can be irrigated by one system.

I am looking to buy some large property this year and hopefully do some farming. It would be great to get some center pivot sprinklers to help. You mentioned they can help cover large areas well. his is exactly what I need.

I want to get a nice sprinkler system for my yard. I agree that these are pretty common for residential landscaping. Something efficient for residential lawns is what I'm looking for right now.

Thank you for pointing out that sprinkler systems are commonly seen in residential irrigation systems. This seems like the right irrigation system for my new lawn. I'll have to do some research and find the best company to come and get a sprinkler system installed for me.

It's good to know that sprinkler systems are the most common in residential areas. I have been looking at other types of irrigation systems and I wasn't sure what made the most sense for me. But I think I should look more into sprinkler systems since they are much more common.

Thanks for helping me learn more about irrigation systems. I didn't know that ditch irrigation are used to help drain in fresh water. I'm kind of interested to learn if this kind of irrigation would be ideal for more wet areas or for large plots of land.

Thank you for pointing out that drip irrigation is the most water efficient irrigation system. My husband and I are wanting to get a new system installed and need to find the right company to do this for us. I'll have to look into finding the best contractor to install the system for us.

It got me when you said that the center pivot system can be used for a whole farm since it can be moved everywhere to ensure that everything will be watered. I will suggest this to my cousins since the just bought a farm, and I think it is 10 hectares wide. So this means that they might have a huge crop area to water.

I had no idea that there are so many various types of irrigation systems. The terraced irrigation looks like it would be best for a hill. My uncle is looking for an irrigation system and lives on a hill and might like knowing this.

I love what you said about drip irrigation. Sprinkler repairs should be administered by professionals. My friend needs his sprinklers fixed, so I'll help him find the best service in town.

My lawn has been dying, so I want to make sure that it's properly irrigated. It makes sense that I would want to get an irrigation system for this. I'll make sure that it properly installed correctly.

Thanks for pointing out that sprinklers would spray a fine mist for about 15 feet from its head. The one in the backyard is not doing that ever since we moved into this place months ago. We might need a sprinkler repair so that the plants and grass will not die on us, since we never had a backyard like that before.

Rotary irrigation definitely feels like it's the design that will work for us the most. Our yard is quite large, so I can bet that this would need a sprinkler that can cover a lot of area at one time. To make sure we do this while not being wasteful with the water, I'll ask a sprinkler system expert to lend us a hand with installing one of these.
