It is summer in Baton Rouge and it is HOT. The intense heat can turn a couple weeks without rain into a major problem for your flowers, shrubs and trees. Keep your landscape healthy with an well designed irrigation system that properly waters. Here are some things to look for when you want a new irrigation system installed at your place.

• Be sure to get a licensed irrigation contractor for a new irrigation system.
• Your water from the irrigation heads should touch the water from the next irrigation head. The overlap ensures there are no dry spots in your lawn, which can lead to plants browning and dying.
• A properly installed system will have each of the irrigation zones planned for the amount of water pressure you have, not just a general rule they use.
• In a well designed system, pop up heads and rotary heads will not be in the same irrigation zone since they put out a drastically different amount of water that will leave part of the area with either way too much water or way too little.
• A properly designed system keeps water spraying on your walkways and walls to a minimum. These can lead to erosion and unnecessarily wet surfaces which are a hazard for people slipping and falling.
• A backflow preventer valve must be installed where your system taps into the water main. This prevents water that has been sitting in your system from going back into the city water line. It is also illegal to not have one of these.
• You should check your system twice a year to see if irrigation tips have become clogged or if small leaks have formed. This can potentially save you money from a loss of water and plants.
• Your irrigation timer should be set to two or three days during the summer. Long and infrequent watering makes for better root development that short and frequent watering. 
• Watering during the early morning is best. Watering in the evening allows the water to sit for too long and can lead to fungus and root rot problems. Watering in the middle of the day can actually damage your plants by steaming them.
