How To Prune Jasmine Growing On A Fence

Steps To Prune Jasmine

1. The best time to prune jasmine heavily is in late spring when the jasmine is finished blooming or in early fall. Jasmine also can handle a lot of heavy pruning so you don't have to worry too much about damaging it. 
   
2. First, trim out all dead vines at ground level. 
   
3. Next, identify the weaker vertical growing vines cut them to ground level. Do not cut out more than a fourth of the total vines. This also only needs to be done every few years. Doing this will allow the stronger vines to grow and produce a much better looking plant.
   
4. If your jasmine is getting top heavy, cut back some of the the vines to about three feet tall. Don't worry, they will regrow soon and look great.
   
5. Then, unravel jasmine vines growing in a direction you do not want. Aim the vine in the direction you want it to grow and secure it with string, Check back regularly to make sure it is not cutting into the vine.
   
6. Finally, lightly cut back jasmine stems that are hanging from the fence. DO NOT cut too deeply or you will cut into the vertical growing vine. This will kill everything attached above it and will leave a large gap in your jasmine fence until it regrows.
   
7. The jasmine will need some light pruning throughout the summer just to keep it nice and trim. Enjoy your beautiful fence.
